“I Believe that one defines oneself by reinvention… To be yourself. To cut yourself out of stone”. -Henry Rollins.
Growing up in Woodville, Georgia, Chetavious was encouraged by those who loved him that nothing comes to those who do not work for it. These words proved to be true. Just like everyone who lived there, he had to work and fight for every opportunity that came his way. His grandmother taught him early on to be his own person and not follow the crowd. For this reason, he took it upon himself to become a leader amongst his peers. Chetavious was not perfect, trouble tempted him daily, but his morals and values in life meant enough to keep his hopes and dreams alive.
Chetavious never let his circumstances define him. It pushed him and fueled him to make a life for himself and his family. Growing up in a Baptist household, losing faith was never an option. “Walk by faith and not by sight". When Chetavious graduated high school, he left home for college and wanted to play baseball, but his dreams were cut short. It led him to join the military. They stationed him across the country, which was a culture shock and an adjustment where he had to learn to adapt to the changes around him.
During his commitment to the military, Chetavious grew to fall in love with his body-building career. It allowed room for him to learn how to be in front of people and gain confidence.
On his way out of the military, he became infatuated with acting. Acting allowed him to share his experiences and connect with all walks of life. Chetavious believes in striving to be seen for more than just his race-- but as a human being who has experienced problems and hurdles. As an actor, it is his job to convey that message and allow room for others to become vulnerable.
Why Acting?
Acting brings me joy and unmatched freedom. Knowing I can support and develop a different perspective for my audience and allows me to share my story worldwide. The characters that I portray are protagonists who are willing to fight for what they believe in, even when they feel like they have to go against the grain. As my character develops, I strive to be seen for more than just my race; but as a “human being” who has experienced problems and hurdles. As an actor, it is my job to convey that message and allow for room to become vulnerable.
